My Favorite Childhood Biscuit

April 26th, 2011Food19 Comments

If you grew up in Malaysia, I am sure you have seen these colorful little biscuits called “attap chee” in Hokkien. I chanced upon them when I was at the Pulau Tikus wet market in Penang recently. I got a packet for my son; he will soon be able to enjoy all the treats that his mother grew up eating!

Ooh! We totally ate these little cookies growing up too!!! They’re very popular and traditional in Puerto Rico where they are called Galletas Florecitas. I wonder where they first originated!

I remember eating a lot of those biscuits too. Another thing is the “assam ko” which is a black sticky sweet paste thing with lots of seeds.

Remember “Haw”?. It’s red and round about the size of a 20 sen coin and comes in very thin slices still available in some supermarkets. Wrapped in paper rolled into a tube.

I remember getting these from the supermarket every weekend when I’d go with my mom. I used to separate the “frosting” from the biscuit and eat them altogether at the end.

    Hi
This brings me back to the corner kedai runcit in the 70s. Follow mum there, and she would get this as a treat. All these transactions recorded in the famous 555 book…..anyone else have the same experience?
